Standards

All cats receive intake health evaluations, parasite control, vaccination assessment, and testing for contagious diseases. We maintain working relationships with licensed veterinarians for routine, preventative, emergency, and medically necessary services. Veterinary handling prioritizes minimizing fear and distress through humane trapping, low-stress techniques, and sedation protocols when necessary.

Every newly admitted cat undergoes a quarantine period before entering the general population. During quarantine, cats are monitored daily for signs of illness, injury, stress, or abnormal behavior. Isolation areas are maintained separately from healthy animal housing, with dedicated cleaning supplies and strict sanitation protocols to prevent cross-contamination.

We believe enrichment is not optional entertainment, but a necessary part of responsible animal care. Our habitats include climbing structures, elevated pathways, hiding spaces, varied textures, naturalistic elements, puzzle feeders, scatter feeding, and sensory stimulation — all designed to recreate the behavioral opportunities cats would naturally encounter outdoors.

Physical handling only occurs when necessary to protect the health, safety, or welfare of the cat — or when a cat voluntarily initiates interaction. Defensive behaviors are interpreted as communication, not defiance. Cats maintain control of all interactions, and handling ceases immediately if a cat withdraws or shows discomfort. We never handle cats for entertainment, photography, or human convenience.

Before disturbing any environment, caretakers complete a visual assessment of every cat — evaluating brightness, alertness, responsiveness, eyes, ears, nose, coat, appetite, water intake, waste, and behavior. Every change from an individual's normal behavior is documented. Caretakers strive to become a predictable, neutral presence that cats associate with safety.
